The parade of storms continues.
Today will be tranquil for most, but downwind of Lake Ontario, there is some lake effect still falling, this evening the lake effect will lift north and dissipate by tomorrow morning
On the
satellite image, we can see our next system developing over the Southern Plains.
With the zonal flow, this is going to move west to east. The system is going to
be a quick mover
Early afternoon Tuesday into Wednesday, the mid-Atlantic region (including the I-95 corridor) and southern New England, another storm will bring accumulating snow. North of the Mason Dixon Line will see lower snow amounts, with areas south of the Line seeing higher amounts.
Southern Connecticut,
Rhode Island, Southeast Massachusetts and Offshore Islands, look to see dusting
to 2 inches, the closer to the Coast the higher the snow amounts. For much of Southern
and far southeast Pennsylvania (including Philadelphia), northern New Jersey,
New York City and Long Island 2-4 inches of accumulation seems likely. Maryland
(including Washington DC metropolitan area and Baltimore). Delaware and Southern
into Central New Jersey will see higher snow accumulations, of 4-8 inches, with
localized higher amounts. The Alleghenies and Laurel Highlands, look to be the
jackpot with 6-12 inches. Depending on how much sleet mixes in, snow amounts
could be lower.
Later Wednesday
another storm will approach and track northeastward through Thursday, producing
snow, ice and rain before it exits from New England. This will be tracking
farther north, so it will be more of a mix event for much of Pennsylvania and
the rest of the Middle Atlantic. With more in the way of snow north of there
Wednesday mid
Afternoon into Thursday widespread precipitation will move in. Much of Southern
Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and Southern New Jersey, this should be primarily
a rain event, then across central Pennsylvania, Central New Jersey up across
Long Island and the Cape and Offshore Island a stripe of heavier sleet and
freezing rain is possible. For northern Pennsylvania, Southern New York State,
Connecticut, Massachusetts, it will start as snow with 1-4 inches looking
likely, then change over to a mix of sleet and freezing rain, then it could possibly
flip to rain.
North of
there, across Northern New York State, and Northern New England several inches
of snow is likely. For these areas this should be primarily an all-snow event,
but there could be some mixing even here, those with the greatest chance of
seeing a mix to rain will be closer to the Coast. The precipitation should wind
down across New England Thursday afternoon into the evening. With Thursday
night into Saturday morning looking mainly dry. But once again colder air will
move into the region and lake effect snow will be falling downwind of Lake
Ontario.
Later Saturday and through Sunday we look to see yet another storm, bring a mess of snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain, who sees what will depend on the exact track. Behind this system an arctic front will sweep in, bringing much colder air back into the region. Sunday night into Monday morning could see a flash freeze, so keep that in mind. Next week is looking to stay active, but the first half of next week will see an arctic air mass with dry air overhead, so that could keep the snow away. So, we will see.
Thanks again!

ReplyDeleteWhat a 'fun' mid-winter! Always look forward to your reports! Happy for the snowmobilers and establishments!
ReplyDeleteThank you.
ReplyDeleteWish we could just get an actual snowstorm for CT been a disappointing winter. When we finally get cold enough it’s to cold and keeps everything suppressed. Well maybe next season will be the season since this seasons almost over lol
ReplyDeleteIs February in New England and NY, the snowiest month usually?
ReplyDeleteWith as much cold as we have had and the fact that mother nature didn’t take advantage of it with a couple of big storms, now we are getting light earlier and dark later,we will see some more storms but probably with the mix.I saw that a good size storm this weekend was going to dump 7-9” on Saturday and 11-13” on Sunday.I just looked and now it’s a mix on Saturday and 1.22 inches of rain on Sunday. The two good storms we were to get dropped 2” instead of 10” and 3” instead of 12+.It is weird the small storms predicted are small but the big storms seem harder to predict.I saw an article,The Title is why is it so tricky to predict a large snowstorm. We have had White ground for Most of the winter but with sleet and rain coming the White will go down the drain.Did the Monkey Wrench get thrown in the forecast.Last year we had snow coming up the coast but the Greenland block was too strong and the storms went out to our South. After this weekend it is supposed to get very cold,I saw 3 nights below 0 and daytime highs around 10 or 12.When that cold air retreats it will become normal and storms will probably follow the recipe of last year, start as Snow, mix with sleet and freezing rain and then plain rain. The rain would total a inch to an inch in a half.North of us would receive 18”-24”. I hope that doesn’t happen and you can only predict the storm not control it.I have been watching this weekends storm and was hoping for a storm 18” plus. That and before the weekend there was a day of 5-6” and another day 6-7” the 6-7” is gone and the 5-6” is now 3-4” I was in heaven, well at least I saw a great forecast.🙄
