 Cold air is moving in!

Here's the look at the surface chart and radar

It's the warmest it's gonna be today. Right now, this cold air invasion is going to continue during the day and temperatures are going to continue to drop. We can see the low pressure and cold front sitting just off the coast with the rain associated with it right behind it. But out to our west and out over the Great Lakes we can see this rain is changing and has changed over to snow. The Snow showing up in the Ohio Valley is associated with the upper level low. The snow showing up over the lower Great Lakes Is lake effect snow.

All of this shows up very well on the infrared satellite

Today into this evening Western central and northern New York state into northern  New England could see a dusting to an inch  of accumulation of a dusting to an inch of accumulation.

And for tomorrow, the cold air is going to be completely in place overhead with gusty north northwest winds creating conditions that feel like the arctic tundra. With very cold air temperatures and even colder wind chills. Wind gust of 30-40+ mph can be expected.

Here are my current ideas For general snowfall. This will be the first widespread snow event across the Northeast

The Adirondacks, Greens. and Whites could see 2-8 inches of snow. While the Berkshires Catskills and Poconos over into northern New Jersey could see a dusting to 2 inches. Elsewhere It will be snow showers and some flurries without much in the way of accumulation. But I do expect to see scattered snow showers even in the coastal plain.

As that cold arctic air moves over the warmer waters of Lake Ontario and Lake Erie We are going to see lake effect snow develop south and east of both lakes. We're going to have a few troughs move through that will be shifting those snow bands around a bit. So that will spread the lake effect around a bit so that any one area shouldn't get buried. .The lake effect is already started to develop South of lake Erie. The bands are going to shift and be coming out of the northwest later today and tonight. The areas south and east of lake Erie and lake Ontario will see the lake snow bands intensify. For tonight and all through Tuesday The lake effect snow will continue. With areas Further away from the lakes  seeing a dusting to 2 inches. Then as you get closer into the The western Mohawk Valley and south and west of Rochester down into buffalo 2-4 inches of lake snow Is possible. and then the closer to the lake you get like for like the southern Tug Hill Into the areas around Syracuse and the higher hills south of east of Syracuse, as well as south of Lake Ontario east of Rochester along with the higher elevations south of Buffalo into northwest Pennsylvania 4-8 " of snow is possible with locally higher amounts likely.

Late in the day Tuesday into Tuesday night The jet stream is going to dive back up north and start to turn off all that like affect snow coming in off the lakes.

For Wednesday and Thursday we are going to see a series of troughs continue to move across the region, keeping things unsettled with rain and snow showers. Then on Friday high pressure approaches and builds in creating generally dry conditions across the region. But there's a possibility of a stray snow shower or flurry. The high pressure will remain overhead for Saturday so it should generally be tranquil  with only a slight chance for a few snow showers. Both Friday and Saturday are going to continue to be quite chilly for this time of year. Then on Sunday we will have a warm front approach and move through with the front we could see scattered rain showers and a few higher elevation mix/snow showers without a lot of accumulation expected. Sunday we'll see our temperatures try to moderate. Monday we'll see the trailing cold front move through bringing rain showers and higher elevation snow showers

That's it for today Thank you for reading the post and following my blog. Yesterday I had A few questions on the post that I couldn't answer. Because for whatever reason I wasn't able to place comments on the page. I will try once again today to get on there and see if I can post answers to your questions.
