Today is looking gloomy!

The last couple of days have been active, with severe thunderstorms in the Middle Atlantic Region, along with torrential rain leading to flooding across parts of the Northeast. As the cold front responsible for the heavy rain slowly slides south and east; the severe threat will move into the extreme Southeast Today.

The high pressure ridging that has been a prominent feature in the north American weather pattern, is going to shift back toward the Southwest starting today.  We’re going to continue to see these shortwave pieces of energy rotate around the edge of the heat dome resulting in rounds of thunderstorm complexes across portions of the Plains into the Midwest.

Surface chart and radar.

We have high pressure moving into the Ohio Valley, keeping them generally dry for the next couple of days. While for the Northeast and Middle Atlantic we have primary low pressure that is stuck and will sit and spin for the next couple of days, bringing numerous waves of rain and scattered thunderstorms to the Northeastern U.S. and New England. That high pressure to our west will make for a tighter pressure gradient making for a gusty north/northeast breeze.  The secondary surface low is going to start to move north and east moving into southern New England. The rain over Pennsylvania and Middle Atlantic will lessen, as rain increases across New York State and New England.

Rain could be heavy at times as it continues to rotate around that meandering area of low pressure. We still stuck in this trough over the region, while this is keeping us generally cool, the humidity is still allowing for a slightly muggy feel to the air. With the slow nature of this system, flash flooding is going to continue to be an issue. Be careful as the creeks, streams and rivers are still running high. This is especially true from Around Allentown Pennsylvania into the Hudson Valley, where localized areas of 9-12 inches of rain fell. Elsewhere general rainfall amounts were 1-3 inches. Remember don’t drive through standing water from flooding!

Estimated total rainfall for the past 24 hours

A Flood Watch remains in effect for the Hudson Valley into southern and central New England.

Thursday will be very similar to today. With rain centered over eastern New York and New England. Elsewhere rain will be more isolated. Friday will see the low pressure still influencing our weather as it continues to slide away. Most of the region should be mainly dry with the best chance for scattered showers up over New England.  Saturday is looking to be a mainly dry day, with only a chance for a few isolated showers. Saturday night and Sunday we will see another cold front approach. This will bring rain showers and thunderstorms across New York State and Pennsylvania. For Monday the cold front will continue to move across the region, allowing rain to reach the rest of the region. I don’t think any day will be a wash out. Then on Tuesday the front stalls, with several areas of low pressure moving along it
