Today’s
Northeast weather discussion…
The surface chart shows a trough dropping into the region, with radar showing scattered snow showers and lake effect snow continuing, along with even ocean effect showers off the coast.
Temperatures
are chilly
We have a
Clipper currently over the Plains of Canada approaching our region for tomorrow
night and Wednesday. The Clipper will move across Southeast Canada heading for
northern Maine. We will also have an upper-level feature that be over New York
State and New England, that will enhance things a bit.
Ahead of the
Clipper a warm front will lift through, allowing for temperatures to warm a bit.
(30’s into the lower 40’s), along with a few scattered rain/snow showers. Winds
will be increasing during the day. Wednesday night, widespread snow will be
falling over interior parts of Pennsylvania, New York State into northern and
central New England. Rain/mix along the Coast, with rain over the Middle
Atlantic.
Wednesday overnight into Thursday morning the arctic front will be approaching. Much colder air coming behind the front. As the front move through, temperatures are going to crash leading to a flash freeze. Rain over southern New England and southern Pennsylvania will change over to light snow. Winds will be gusty, with 10-30 mph winds with gust over 40 mph likely. NWS may issue wind advisories and warnings.
Snow showers
and a few snow squalls will bring a trace to a few inches of snow, with the highest
amounts nearer the Great Lakes where 6-12+ inches of snow will be possible. As far as general snowfall amounts for late
Wednesday through Thursday.
Along the northern
tier of Pennsylvania 2-4 inches, with northwest Pennsylvania seeing 3-6 inches. Southwest Pennsylvania could see 1-2 inches of snow, with the higher terrain East of Pittsburgh seeing 2-4 inches. For Western, Central and Northern New York State look to see 4-8 inches The Adirondacks
will see 5-10 inches, Catskills into the Poconos look to see 3-6 inches.
The Eastern
Mohawk Valley into Southeast New York State north and west on New York City and
East of the Hudson Valley 2-4 inches looks likely, those in Hudson and Champlain
Valleys look to see a general 1-3 inches.
Most of
Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine look to see 2-6 inches, with a bit more for west
central Maine. The Greens and Whites could pick up 4-8 inches. Western Massachusetts
looks to see a general 3-6 inches, with the Berkshires 4-8 inches. Central into Northeast Massachusetts seeing
1-3 inches. Much of Connecticut looks to see 1-2 maybe 3 inches.
Southeast Massachusetts,
Rhode Island, Long Island, most of New Jersey and Eastern Maryland and Delaware
look to stay mainly rain.
Friday and
over the weekend, winds will be gusty with colder temperatures more like
January than December. Over the weekend a few troughs will swing through
kicking off a few snow showers, along with lake effect downwind of the Lake
Erie and Lake Ontario.
Monday a
frontal system will approach the region, Later Monday into Tuesday a warm front
will lift through the region bringing snow/rain showers. This will be followed
by the cold front later on Tuesday into Tuesday night.
We will have
a warming trend next week. But based on what I’m seeing the warm might only
last a week or so, before more arctic air works in for the 2nd half
of December into January.
This is crazy,we are due for 4-7” of snow and then after this storm we could get some squalls with the arrival of some colder air.I know it can become colder but with as cold as it has been ( 10 degrees this AM) Then I checked the Temperatures for next week and felt that familiar feeling of when it gets warm and snow melts before CHRISTmas,40-45 is horrible but 50's after 3 days of mid 40's and then 50's for a couple days then back into the 40's.During this time there is several chances for some amount of rain.I know that you said that the temperatures may go up and down but I thought that was going to be some low 20's up into the 30's then down to upper 20's get some snow and a bit colder with a few nights below zero.and day's around 0.Then the High that brought the nasty cold would go SE and the air that was pumped up would bring us to the 40's again.Another CHRISTmas outside standing by the fire pit eating desert.
ReplyDeleteOnce past mid month into the end of the month, cold will return, along with some snow chances. This up and down will be with us over the winter. So we will just have to see how the storm tracks and timing of temperature swings work out.
