Daily forecast discussion…

Here’s a look at the current frontal chart and radar imagery

Our storm is working across Virginia and the Middle Atlantic. Currently the upper-level low is over Kentucky and Tennessee. There is another upper-level low up near Atlantic Canada, this is what is keeping this storm suppressed to the south.

We have that cold front over northern Pennsylvania and north of New York City, this is separating the colder dry air from the warmer moister air coming up from the south. This will keep most of the snow south over Pennsylvania and points south, with little to nothing north of it, So NYC, Long Island into far southern Connecticut, Rhode Island, into Southeast Massachusetts shouldn’t see more than a few snow showers for time to time. General snow amounts look to be around where I’ve been saying they would be, give or take a bit.  Looking at radar we can see moderate to heavy snow falling across southeast Pennsylvania, Maryland and Delaware.  As the storm continues to move east the snow behind the dry slot will work through later this afternoon into tonight.

The next few days will be very cold with generally dry conditions, Northwest winds will be breezy. There will be the chance for hit and miss snow showers, as will as more lake effect snow, as that cold air moves over the Great Lakes, but amounts will be much lighter than they have been over the last 4 days.  The higher elevations of New York State and New England, could see a few inches of snow by the end of the week.

With the cold, we won’t see a lot of melting so the snow will stick around.

The wind will be calming down as we get into Friday. Temperatures will also be warming up a bit for the Weekend.

As I’ve been saying the last couple of days, we have the potential for a storm Friday and Saturday. We will have two shortwave disturbances in the northern stream and another in the southern stream. The question is will these  pieces of energy interact and if so how much. Right now, this looks to be suppressed south, similar to the one coming though right now. So, if things come together this could be another storm with snow and ice from Texas up through the Ohio Valley and into mid-Atlantic. Behind this system we will see the cold return for next week. Right now, we will just have to watch how things trend and how the end of week storm tracks, any shift northward could mean big impacts farther north.

  1. Good morning Rebecca, the temperature in our area has been right about normal. It has seemed colder than the temperature because of the winds. I think it was a week ago that you said we would be getting extremely cold in this area. I was just wondering if there is colder air that will come into our area for a While. we have had the temperature is needed to produce snow but no storms. Yesterday we were predicted to receive between six and 9 inches of snow starting right Friday night and continuing through Saturday afternoon, but looking at the chart this morning that storm has disappeared and looks to be going out to The ocean, we’re the only part of Massachusetts that gets hit would be the cape. I know that That having snow was in your winter outlook, and that any storm that came into our area Would have to meet up with Cole there to produce snow. Yesterday before I was leaving the house I looked at the computer and saw that we had a chance for snow on Saturday and 24 hours later it’s saying what it said the day after Christmas and that is that no accumulating snow for 10 days.

  2. As for cold, the PV isn't coming a far south as I thought. So While temperatures will be quite cold, they won't be extreme cold. Temperatures will likely be 10-20 degrees below the long term average, instead of the 30-40 degrees below average I thought we would be seeing. But considering I was talking about this pattern several weeks ago, I don't think I messed up too bad. As far as snow, if you're talking about this current storm hitting the Middle Atlantic, I never said it would bring snow into New York State or New England; so I'm not sure who was predicting that much snow. I did say there could be snow showers across northern New England into northern New York State, due to the confluence zone that sat up between the low near Hudson Bay and the one that retrograded west out of Atlantic Canada. As for the next storm end of this week, that one is still up in the air, but if it does form, it looks to be suppressed south.

  3. Well with the Temperature at18 degrees and wind that just won’t stop,it certainly feels cold enough so the PV will not be missed. No you didn’t say anything about snow, the wreathe app.came loaded with an app.called "Weather" and the snow prediction was there and then it it was gone.I would say that your long range Thoughts are much more accurate than many forecast that are made 3-4 days before an event.Ireally don’t remember you "messing up too bad" ever. The difference in Temperatures is not that bad at all considering it was made weeks ago.I just wanted to know for Ice making on the local lakes. It really is too bad that with all the cold no storms too take advantage of it.When it does go above 25-30 we will see a little snow and ice.
