Has the recent rainfall helped the areas experiencing drought?

 The Northeast and Northern Mid-Atlantic has experienced a mix of improving and persisting drought conditions.

(As per Drought Monitor) “Targeted improvements continued this week in locations that saw ample rainfall and improving streamflow, groundwater levels, and/or soil moisture. Extreme drought contracted on the Delmarva Peninsula, while severe drought shrank in eastern Massachusetts, Connecticut, southeastern New York, central New Jersey, northern Delaware, and southern West Virginia. Moderate drought eased in parts of southern Connecticut, southeastern Pennsylvania, southwestern New Jersey, and West Virginia. Abnormal dryness was erased from parts of northwestern Massachusetts, south-central Pennsylvania, western Maryland, and central West Virginia. However, abnormal dryness expanded slightly in southern Maine due to a lack of precipitation and reduced groundwater levels. The U.S. Drought Monitor released on July 23 showed 1% of the Northeast in extreme drought, 7% in severe drought, 13% in moderate drought, and 14% as abnormally dry compared to 1%, 8%, 13%, and 14%, respectively, last week. For the rest of May, the region will likely see average to slightly below average temperatures. As far as precipitation the next few days look to stay dry. But then the region will see widespread scattered rain starting Sunday and lasting into Thursday.
